Chrome Team Stories: Kyle Herbert

Building a strong, hardworking team is everything to us. We see that our team are focused, dedicated and ambitious when it comes to ’Chrome’s goals and in their own. If you keep up with our content, you’ll know just how invested we are in them.

When recruiting, we look for like-minded individuals who share our values. We don’t do dishonesty and we know that toxic workplaces ’aren’t sustainable. At Chrome, we value passion, transparency, collaboration and performance, and we strive to deliver this every day. In return we offer support, career development and a lot of laughter!

We recently celebrated the three-year work anniversary of our Senior Telecommunications Engineer Kyle Herbert. Kyle has consistently shown his passion for his role and dedication to Chrome. He was also our Employee of the Year in both 2020 and 2021!

We invited Kyle to share how he’s progressed in his role over the past few years. We find out what advice he’d give to those looking to become a Telecommunications Engineer, and those interested in joining Chrome.

Congratulations on your recent promotion, Kyle! Tell us about your telecoms career so far. How did you become an engineer?

My telecoms career started in the sales team of another company. When selling telecoms systems, I became really interested in the technical elements of the products. I thought a lot about my career in telecoms and decided that this is direction I’d like to go in. After researching, I decided that training to become an engineer would be the right move for me.

I started looking for opportunities in Hampshire and found out about Chrome online. After finding out more about the business, I saw that they had a Trainee Telecommunications Engineer vacancy and applied. I was successful in my interview and began my training. It’s mad to think that this was now three years ago!

How have you progressed since joining Chrome?

Once I’d completed my training I was promoted to Telecommunications Engineer. With three years of engineering experience, I’m now Chrome’s Senior Telecommunications Engineer. I’ve achieved this through working hard and having clear goals of what I want to accomplish.

I’ve also followed guidance from management, and actioned any advice I’ve been given. In and outside of work, I’ve dedicated time to learning and developing my abilities.

You’ve recently been promoted to Senior Telecommunications Engineer. How have your role and responsibilities developed over time?

I now split my time between the office and site visits for customer installations and maintenance appointments. I also take care of our other engineers, overseeing installs and training new members of the team. If anyone has any technical issues or needs advice to help them in their roles, I’m on hand to help.

How have Chrome supported your development?

The company have supported my development by encouraging me to go for it and to achieve my goals.

They have also encouraged me by funding my training courses, allowing me to achieve industry recognised certifications. These include UniFi’s Ubiquiti Enterprise Wireless Admin Training Course and Hikvision’s HCSA. I also stay up to date with Ericsson-LG iPECS courses, as we are an Ericsson-LG reseller. Chrome have further encouraged my progression within the company with management and leadership training.

If you had to give one favourite thing about working for Chrome, what would it be?

My favourite part about working for Chrome is the atmosphere and environment at our office. The team all support each other, we all genuinely want each other to do their best! We share a great work-hard play-hard mentality.

Do you have any advice that you’d give to someone wanting to start a career as a Telecommunications Engineer?

The main piece of advice I’d give is to get stuck in! You’ll need to get practical experience and soak up as much knowledge as you can. It may seem overwhelming at first, but don’t be scared get involved as you’re there to learn!

Lastly, do you have any advice that you’d give to someone starting at Chrome Telecom?

I’d advise anyone starting at Chrome to be open and be yourself, no matter the role that you’ll be doing. Don’t be scared to ask questions, there’s a lot to take in so it’s better to ask and learn.

Thank you to Kyle for sharing his Chrome story. We hope you’ve found it interesting to hear about his development over the past three years. We’re here to support the growth of our customers and our employees, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved.

We’re currently recruiting for a range of roles at every level. Check out our ‘Careers’ page and Indeed account to view our current vacancies. If you have any queries or if you’d like to enquire about future opportunities, then reach out to us today!
